Young voters want Nganj to become a real city

Youths who cast votes in Sunday?s Narayanganj City Corporation polls hope that their first mayor would be sincere in ensuring utility services and improve civic amenities and dedicated to true development of the city.

The official announcement of Narayanganj as a city corporation has not really made it a city; it is the mayor who will have to upgrade it to a modern one, they said.

Many youths were seen standing on Sunday in queues to apply their voting rights?mostly for the first time in life?to elect their mayor and councillors for running the newly formed city corporation for the next five years. Talking to daily sun, these new generation voters expressed hope that the city will be free from corruption and terrorism, have a developed drainage system and a congenial atmosphere for business.

They feel the necessity of bringing an end to the crises of gas and electricity supply, establishing a university and a medical college and having entertainment facilities in the new city.

Ramzan Hossain, 20, who came to the Laxsminarayan Girls? Primary School centre, said he wants Narayanganj to emerge as a city free from terrorism and extortion and having all civic amenities.

Safa Khanam, a voter of Adarsha School centre, said the mayoral candidates pledged a lot, but the real development of the city is possible only if the mayor-elect acts according to his/her promises. She expressed hope that there will be sufficient entertainment facilities in Narayanganj city, which at present does not have many.

Suman, 21, said being a major business hub of the country the city needs standard educational and health facilities, proper drainage system and developed communication infrastructure.

Anisur Rahman, 26, told daily sun that a university and a hospital should be built soon.

Mahbubur Rahman, 19, said, ?I hope there will be initiatives for the total development required to upgrade Narayanganj to a city corporation.?

Jahanara Begum, 28, said a bridge should be built over the Shitalakkhya while communications between Dhaka and Narayanganj should also be developed.

?I expect that the new mayor will play a crucial role to ensure empowerment of women,? said Munni Akhter, 22.
