The turnout was huge but enthusiasm was not evident in Narayanganj City Corporation election on Sunday as voters were in grip of panic fearing violence over the high voltage polls.?We went to polling centres with much excitement but we didn?t show it off,? said a voter in Adamjee area. Two front-runners ? ruling Awami League-backed former lawmaker AKM Shamim Osman and immediate past mayor of the now-defunct Narayanganj municipality Selina Hayat Ivy ? contested the polls for the post of the city?s mayor while BNP-backed Taimur Alam Khandaker pulled himself out of the election race a few hours before the polling commenced.

Many voters alleged that they had received threats on their way to polling centres.

?You hardly find any merry mood among the voters as they are passing time in fear of reprisal because they have been threatened,? said a voter of Chasara area.

?You have to face dire consequence if my candidate fails,? said the voter quoting a cadre of mayoral hopeful.

Both Shamim and Ivy brought allegation of casting fake votes and biasness of law enforcers.

Shamim said a policeman was seen persuading voters in favour of Ivy while Ivy raised allegations that her polling agents were driven out of a number of centres.

On-duty presiding officers at different polling centres, however, denied the allegations.

?I have not received any complaint about casting fake votes,? Mostafa Ali Siddique, presiding officer at Narayanganj Club, said.

Saleha Khatun, a middle-aged woman voter of Jalkuri union said she failed to cast her vote as she found that her vote had already been cast by someone else.

When asked, election officials of Jalkuri Primary School asked denied it.
