Hanif, Suranjit deny AL support to Shamim Osman

AppId is over the quota AppId is over the quota Awami League acting general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif and senior leader Suranjit Sengupta on Friday said the ruling party has not extended its support to any candidate vying for the mayoral post in the Narayanganj City Corporation polls slated for October 30.

Their claim came hours after the AL high command decided to back Shamim Osman as mayoral candidate in the election to the newly formed city corporation.

?Awami League has not extended support to any of the mayoral candidates in Narayanganj City Corporation polls,? Hanif said while talking to reporters at party President Sheikh Hasina?s political office at Dhanmondi in the city. He said those, who have announced the party support to Shamim Osman, did it from their own. ?It?s not the party decision.?

On Thursday, AL organising secretaries Ahmed Hossain, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury and Abu Sayed Al Hahmud Swapan conveyed the party decision to support Shamim Osman to him at his campaign office in Narayanganj.

?According to the laws of the Election Commission, there is no scope of extending party support to any candidate in the local government election,? Hanif said.

Meanwhile, Suranjit said there is no constitutional and legal scope of party support in the local government polls. No support has been given to anyone in Narayanganj elections on behalf of Awami League.

He was addressing a discussion organised by Dhaka city unit of Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote at Dhaka Reporters Unity in the city.

When his attention was drawn about the statements made by three organising secretaries in support of Shamim Osman?s candidature, Suranjit said, ?It?s their personal matter.?

?I hope the election will be held in a peaceful manner and the people?s choice will be reflected in the electoral results,?? Suranjit said.

On Thursday night, three AL organising secretaries?Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Abu Saeed Al Mahmud Shapan and Ahmed Hossain? along with AL women affairs secretary Fazilatunnesa Indira and local MP Hanat Kaisar visited Shamim Osman?s campaign office in Narayanganj and said party leaders and activists in the district would work for Shamim as per the party decision.

Addressing the discussion, Suranjit underscored the need for making the AL-led grand alliance stronger to face the political issues politically.

?We have to fortify the grand alliance by removing all divisions to face our rivals politically,? Suranjit added.

Taking a swipe at Khaleda Zia for her demand for another Liberation War, the veteran AL leader said the opposition leader called for the war to turn Bangladesh into Pakistan.
