15pc policemen punished a year for misconduct

About 15 percent police personnel, including officers, are punished every year for indulging in various immoral and criminal activities, measures that, officials say, are taken to brighten the image of the law enforcement agency.

The Ministry of Home Affairs and the main units of the police department take punitive actions on the basis of formal complaints against police officials.

According to police headquarters statistics, punitive measures were taken against 65,744 police personnel, including 16 superintendents of police (SPs), 12 additional SPs, 41 assistant SPs and 328 inspectors, in the past four years and seven months.

Alamgir Alam, an assistant inspector general of Police at the Headquarters Security Cell, said the police department is more sincere than any other organisation.

?That is why the authorities take action soon after receiving complaints against any member of the organisation,? he said.

?Police always have to deal with the masses directly to serve them. So, there is every possibility of a policeman?s misconduct or misbehaviour affecting society easily,? the AIG added.

The official said a major objective of punishing offenders is to maintain the chain of command in the disciplined force.

The government sent three SPs on forced retirement for their alleged involvement in massive corruption, said officials concerned.

Three other SPs were also awarded minor punishment in 2007, four in 2008, one in 2009, two in 2010 and three in 2011. An additional SP was punished heavily in 2008.

Two ASPs were sent on forced retirement for gross misconduct and corruption in 2007 and another in 2010. Eight ASPs were awarded minor punishment in 2007, four in 2008, 11 in 2009 and 12 in 2010.

Of 328 inspectors who faced punitive measures, 19 were dismissed for corruption, 42 given major punishment and 267 awarded minor punishment.

A total of 298 constables were sent on forced retirement for their alleged involvement in gross misconduct and corruption.

The police department suspended 435 others on similar charges. More than 4,000 were given major punishment during the past 55 months while 1,067 police personnel were given minor punishment.
