Minister blasts unilateral withdrawal of water

A minister on Friday criticised the neighbouring country for unilateral withdrawal of waters of the common rivers affecting Bangladesh?s agriculture, livelihood and environment.

Minister for Food and Disaster Management Dr Abdur Razzaque, at a function, emphasised on dialogue and engagement at the regional level to reach an understanding on sharing of water resources among the countries at the downstream of the Himalayan rivers. The unilateral withdrawal of waters by a neighbouring country is causing a lot of problems for us. We think people, especially the media, should raise voice to realise our due share of water resources through international agreement,? he said.

He mentioned that the unilateral withdrawal of river waters has been a threat to the country?s agriculture, alongside negative effects of the climate change which has made Bangladesh extremely vulnerable.

?The salinity level in Bangladesh is increasing day by day due to the effects of inadequate water flow of the rivers caused by unilateral water withdrawal by our neighbouring country,? the minister told a workshop on ?Climate Change and Preparation of Bangladesh,? jointly organised by Bangladesh Climate Change Journalist Forum and Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh, as chief guest.

Dr Ahsan Uddin Ahmed said that the effects of climate change will come in future at the extreme level due to the present level of global warming and agriculture sector would be the worst victim of the climatic fallout.

?We have to prepare ourselves for tackling with the worst impacts of climate change by improving and introducing salinity resilient varieties of rice as early as possible,? he said adding that the five existing salinity resilient rice varieties in Bangladesh will help us to fight salinity in our coastal regions.

Apart from the salinity resilient rice varieties, the government is trying to improve drought and water-logging resilient rice varieties, Abdur Razzaque also said in the seminar held at Institution of Diploma Engineers.

Dr Ahsan Uddin Ahmed and Monjurul Hannan Khan were the key-note speakers of the workshop.
