Clean technology of brick kilns can dramatically reduce mortality in city

A brick kiln control law is under active consideration of the Government to curb heavy environmental pollution from energy-intensive and outdated brick kilns, Minister of State for environment and forestry of Hasan Mahmud said on Sunday.


In a workshop in the city, he said that such pollution have a negative impact on the environment.


The clean air and sustainable environmental project of the Department of environment and the World Bank jointly organized the workshop with the title "introducing energy-efficient clean technologies in the area of brick of Bangladesh" the key findings of the country's brick, to share the processing industry.

World Bank senior environmental specialist Shakil A. setting presented a paper on ' alternative and improved brick kiln technologies ' and WB advisers Lelia Croitoru "Economic costs and benefits of different technologies".


Chinese energy specialist Jie Li and brick expert Xiao Hui presented a paper on "China's experience in transforming the brick industry."


The two WB-environment specialists said that the pollution by solid chimneys in more than 90 percent of the brick kilns in Bangladesh account for up to 20 percent of premature mortality as a result of environmental factors.


You said, the main source of fine particulate pollution that 530 highly polluting lorries and energy-intensive kilns with solid smokestacks in the North of Dhaka produce the 2.1 billion bricks per year are also the city.


It calls for immediate replacement of the outdated furnaces of clean brick making technologies such as the vertical shaft brick kilns and the hybrid Hoffmann, cement kilns which are socially profitable, as the highly polluting lorries fixed chimney kilns.


You said that the replacement of Northern Dhaka would reduce existing brick ovens with vertical shaft brick, the kilns premature mortality by more than 60 percent kilns it would reduce during hybrid Hoffmann by 45 percent.


She said that the brick-making industry about contribute 1% to the country's GDP and about one million jobs.


Speakers described the increased costs of flood free land and shortage as obstacles to the transition to brick kilns with clean technologies.


They said that flood free land would require operating brick kilns with clean technologies.


For a solution, which they set up of the industrial park on flood free land exclusively for one brick kilns proposed for.


The two experts said, that their reports of the Government and other stakeholders to provide the information that they need would the industry of the country, which use only cleaner technologies for the development of an energy-efficient brick.
