Peoples verdict against extortionists: Ivy

Awami League rebel mayoral candidate Dr Selina Hayat Ivy who was leading in the Narayanganj City Corporation polls by a huge margin on Sunday night said the people gave verdict against extortionists and land grabbers through their ballots.

?It is a victory of the people,? she told reporters in an instant reaction at her residence. Ivy said she wants to work for the people irrespective of party and belief of Narayanganj.

She said she was an Awami League activist and will remain the same although the party did not extend its support to her as the mayoral candidate in the polls to the newly formed city corporation.

Earlier in the morning, Ivy alleged that her polling agents were driven away from several polling centres, including Tularam College.

She cast her vote in Shishubagh School centre through Electronic Voting Machine.

Meanwhile, ruling party-backed mayoral candidate Shamim Osman termed the election ?stage-managed?.

?The election is stage-managed. If I knew about such an election, I would not have participated in it,? he told reporters at Narayanganj Riffles Club at about 3:30 pm.

Shamim Osman brought allegations against a section of policemen and local administration of favouring his rival Ivy in the polls. ?Police were completely biased. They were purchased by Jamaat bribes and were persuading voters to caste votes in favour of Ivy.?

He alleged that the entire local administration worked against him in the polls.

The AL-supported mayoral candidate said he held a voter while casting fake vote for Ivy and handed him over to Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members. ?The voter with the help of on-duty policemen was casting his vote for Ivy,? he alleged.

Shamim Osman said he had nothing to do even after knowing about the stage-managed polls as his hands were tied being a ruling party-backed candidate.
